Dave Eggers and Valentino Achak Deng

In his book What is the What, Dave Eggers tells a story based on the life of Sudanese refugee Valentino Achak Deng. Deng fled the Sudan as a young boy in the 1980s, growing up in refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Wednesday evening Eggers and Deng will be speaking on the UW-Madison campus as part of the Humanities Without Borders lecture series. Find event details here.

Decorative Arts, WI

Decorative Arts in Wisconsin by Anne Foote and Elaine Smedal. Published in 1948, it includes a portfolio of 15 silkscreened plates. All with a very Scandinavian feel. I love the front cover.

West Side Bookshop, Ann Arbor MI

Okay, we all know how much I loved Ann Arbor. And here's another reason why. There are a LOT of bookstores. I surely could've spent an entire day in the West Side Bookshop. Just walking in to this place makes you feel all literary. Honestly, I don't remember much about the selection of books, I was so wrapped up in the atmosphere. If you're in Ann Arbor, you have to stop in here.

Off Keck Road : Wisconsin

A quietly graceful little book.  It tells a simple story of a woman growing up and returning to Green Bay, WI over 50 years time.
