Barriques : Madison WI

In a town overflowing with coffeeshops, some will inevitably be better than others. Barriques is one of the good ones. There are now five, yes five, Barriques in the Madison area, all owned by a local family. If I were forced to choose a favorite (to be fair, I have only ever been to two of them) I would pick the downtown Madison location, near the capitol square.

In addition to the usual coffee and espresso drinks, they also serve wine, beer, sandwiches, salads, baked goods and then some. The food is much better than standard coffeeshop fare. You know how the only reason you eat at some coffeeshops is because you're already there? Not this one. Today for lunch I enjoyed their Wisconsin Dip sandwich which has some sort of heavenly melty cheese and lots of it. A cup of Chicken Coconut Curry soup and some fresh greens just made it that much better. And I'd go back tomorrow and do it all over again.

By the bottle, there are so many different wines to choose from. Sooo many. In fact, they have "the wall of 100" featuring a changing selection of 100 wines under $10. Other wines at Barriques cover a range of prices, so there is something for everyone.
