Winter's textures

I never found ice to be terribly interesting until I lived next to a lake. Watching the lake go back and forth between ice and water is really really neat! I get accustomed to the lake being this flowing, moving body of liquid and then one day it's frozen in place. Literally and figuratively. Twigs just stick straight out of it. Dogs are running across it. People are setting up little ice fishing huts a quarter mile from the shore. It's all a little bit surreal.

Walking along the shore, I was also struck by the texture between the ice and water.

  1. I have to admit that one of my greatest inspirations living in this state is frozen lakes/rivers and ice fishing shanty towns. Locally, in Sauk City/Prairie du Sac, the river doesn't freeze because we are right below the dam, but we do get a lot of ice. I have probably photographed that more than anything else, especially when the layers wash up towards shore and stack up on one another. It's so fragile and so beautiful.

But, my heart is really in those little shanty towns. I don't fish, but that doesn't matter. Being there and taking snapshots is such a happy place for me.

    Happy Weekend!

  2. I haven't yet taken any photos of the ice shanty towns but everytime I pass them (which is pretty much everyday on Lake Wingra) I wish I had my camera. One of these days...
